April 15, 2008
Hi, Everybody!
The Kenai Performers present LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, at the Old Town
Playhouse in Kenai directed by Terri Zopf-Schoessler. Based on the cult
classic, Terri has blended humor, a singing plant, a sadistic dentist,
and sweet love between two skid-row denizens into a rollicking musical
well worth watching again and again.
Terri says: "For the past six weeks, your community members have
been leading double lives: Teachers, lawyers, students, mechanics--you
name it--by day and talented performers by night! You are invited to
see the result as Little Shop of Horrors plays Friday-Sunday, April
18-20 and 25-27--7 PM on Fridays and Saturdays; 3 PM on Sundays. Since
seating is limited, and we hope to be sold out every night, we recommend
getting your tickets in advance! Tickets are $10 and $12 from our staunch
supporters at River City Books and Charlotte's in Kenai.
"The show is campy, twisted, a little suggestive, and it features
outstanding '60s girl-group harmonies and rhythms. It also has a man-eating
plant, a sadistic dentist, and a heroine "with a past," so
use your best judgment about bringing children. For adults and kids
with a warped sense of humor, it's laugh out loud funny!
"We would love to see you there!"
Tickets are available at River City Books and Charlotte's, and will
be sold at the door. All performances will be held at the Old Town Playhouse
in Kenai.

March 23, 2008
Hi, Everybody! A little more info on Theatre Camp, as I ve had a lot
of questions:
Summer in the Playhouse is the name of Kenai Performers annual Theatre
Camp. Just some info for those of you who are new to the list: Summer
in the Playhouse is actually two camps running at the same time. In
the morning we do a camp with kids finishing first through sixth grades,
and in the afternoons we do one with kids who have just finished sixth
through 12th grades. (Sixth graders can choose if they want to go in
with the older or the younger camp.) Siblings of different ages can
go to whichever camp the parents choose, if they want to keep them all
in the same camp.
Camps run for three hours a day five days a week for four weeks. In
the past, we had the younger camp only run for three weeks, but we are
thinking of going four weeks with each camp, and offsetting the camps
so that we start with one, then bring the other on after a week, and
that makes the shows come out on two different weekends.
In each camp we do a full musical, though the kids themselves decide
what they want to do, and one year the older camp went with a non-musical.
We create the musical ourselves from a story and the kids we ve got,
their favorite music, dances, personalities and ideas. The shows are
performed for three shows on the weekend at the end of the camp. They
are Kenai Performers-quality shows, and we sell tickets to them. They
are always packed.
I have been asked often about younger kids, and am considering a one-week
camp for kids who have NOT been through first grade yet. Let me know
what you think.
I am the teacher/director, and we have many Kenai Performers who come
in and work with the kids on sets, costumes, dance, music, make up,
lights, painting, etc. This is the only Kenai Performers show where
some people are paid to teach, so there is a fee for the camp.
Price for the camp MAY have to change this year, but it has been $75
per week, though you have to go to the whole camp. The price per week
just meant that the younger kids paid less because their camp was shorter.
If we go with the longer camps for both ages, they will each be $300
for the whole four-week camp, unless in planning the camp we find we
need to add teachers, and thus change the price this year. We have not
had that planning meeting at this point, but this is what we ve done
in the past. But it s worth it!. Kids learn all aspects of theatre including
work on sets, costumes, lights, make up, dance, music and acting. Not
to mention that it s REALLY FUN!
The following message was sent a few days ago to see about timing. I
ve just added a bunch of names to my list, so I m sending it again for
those who didn t get it yet. If you already got this, sorry!
It's time to start thinking about Summer In the Playhouse - Kenai Performers'
Summer Theatre Camp! I need to set some dates, and I know a lot of you
have been asking me about it, so could you give me some feedback?
School is out on May 21, a Wed. I am thinking of starting on Monday,
May 26 with the younger camp, and on Monday June 2 for the older camp.
Each camp will run four weeks, giving the younger camp a little more
time for theirs, and still offsetting the shows by a week. That would
put the younger camp show on June 20, 21, 22, and the older camp show
on June 27,28 and 29.
If people prefer the 3 week younger camp, we could start on May 26
and do the show on June 13, 14 and 15. One thing we're thinking is that
it would be good to have the first planning/writing week just to ourselves
with the younger camp, then start the planning and writing with the
older camp.
I don't have the exact dates of the Triumv. camp, but he plans to start
mid-June. I don't know how long they go. (I think to mid July) If there
are those of you who want to do both camps, please let me know, and
we can factor that in.
We have a WHOLE BUNCH of exciting ideas for shows this year, and a
lot of people wanting to come, so please let me know what times and
situations YOU would prefer, and I will let you know very soon so we
can all plan together. Please let me know if June works for you, and
if you prefer a three or four week camp for kids in Grades 1-6.
THANKS!
Carol
PS Also if you would be interested in a one-week camp for pre-first
graders.
And also if you would like to help with the camps this year. THANKS!

Hi, Everybody!
WOW!! You should SEE the PLAYHOUSE!! Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre
has brought Tennessee Williams' ultimate show, CAMINO REAL, to the Old
Town Playhouse for THIS WEEKEND ONLY! In this classic, Williams spent
years putting together elements of theatre that had never been used
in conjunction with each other before in a successful attempt to create
new theatre forms! 25 musicians, actors, directors and tech team have
completely transformed the BIG SIDE of the Old Town Plahouse to bring
you this intense theatrical experience! The Live Band is not the least
of the powerful presentation! Playing three times only, tonight's show
was at 7:00, and tomorrow, Saturday, March 8, there will be two opportunities
to see CAMINO REAL - one at 2:00 and one at 7:00! Tickets are available
at the door - Students, Seniors and Military $8 General Admission $10.
Asked about the "rating" for Camino Real, FST gave us this
info:
"We are calling it PG13 here due to some adult situations...there
is no nudity or really foul language...but it is a complex play that
might be difficult to follow for younger folk."
"Make voyages! Attempt them! There is nothing else."
Unlike anything else he wrote, Tennessee Williams' Camino Real is filled
with symbolic images that speak directly to the subconscious as literary
figures Don Quixote, Lord Byren, Camille and others pass through the
Camino Real, a way- station for lost souls. The play provides a ringside
view into the fears and emotions he wrestled as he faced the invevitabilities
of mortality.
Twenty-nine years in the making, the play is Tennessee Williams' most
thoughtful and challenging work. Played on Broadway in 1953"
On SUNDAY at 7:00, FST will be presenting a one-woman show, I WROTE
THIS PLAY TO MAKE YOU LOVE ME. performed by author, Anne Thibault. Anne
has performed this in many venues to rave reviews!!! Showtime is 7:00.
Show contains strong adult language and situations. For more information
about these two amazing performances, please check it out on the FST
website, www.fstalaska.org
Three times we have had the pleasure and privilege of enjoying SHAKESPEARE
done by these amazing Fairbanks folks! Now we have this brief opportunity
to see them in modern MODE! Hope to see YOU at the PLAYHOUSE this weekend!
Here's a bit of information you might enjoy about "I Wrote This
Play to Make You Love Me":
Here is a bit about Anne Thibault's one woman show:
"I Wrote This Play to Make You Love Me"
by Anne Thibault
I Wrote This Play to Make You Love Me is a one-woman memory play
about motherlessness and promiscuity and their intersection in the
life of Lysette, an itinerant actress playing Nora in a Doll's House.
It's been twenty-five years since Lysette's mother left her family,
but her desertion still haunts them.Lysette, an itinerant, marginally
successfull New York actress, fills the void her mother left behind
with a procession of one-night stands with faceless men and short
term acting jobs performing the classics for sparse audiences in the
hinterlands. When faced with the challenge of playing Nora in A Doll's
House, another woman who leaves her chidlren, Lysette faces the family
inheritance: surrender. As she trades instant intimacy for brief companionship,
her solitude becomes even vaster and more irreparable. With her only
sibling dead, her period three weeks late, a married boyfriend nowhere
to be seen, and a houseful of overprotective maternal New England
lesbians, Lysette struggles with the enigmatic and incaluable continuum
of love.
I Wrote This Play to Make You Love Me has been performed at NC Stage,
the Clarence Brown Theatre company, and has had readings at the New
Yourk Theatre Workshop, the Boston Peabody Theatre, and the Lark Playwright's
Festival.
Anne Thibault's plays include: bile, No Place to Look for a Mother,
and an adaptation fo Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. She is
a NYC-based actor/write/director and currently writes the column "the
best book you never read" in the magazine Beyond Race.
