Summer has barely begun, and the kids are well into rehearsals for "Summer at the Playhouse 2009", the Curtain Call Boutique is rapidly expanding it's inventory, and Rita has built beautiful new flower boxes for the outside of the Playhouse.

They say it takes a village to produce a play, but it also takes some behind-the-scenes help to support theater in general. Kenai Performers recently opened Curtain Call Consignment, which is a women's clothing boutique in the Old Town Playhouse. It was necessary to enclose a section of the playhouse for this endeavor, and Doug Baxter of Batir Construction volunteered a crew and its expertise. Needless to say, what would have taken us weeks to construct, they brilliantly built in an afternoon. Not only is it functional, it is attractive and borders on art itself. We had a successful and well-received grand opening, which would not have been possible without Doug Baxter, Shane Hines, Mike Honrud and Lynn Johnson. Your time, talent and support of community theater deserves a standing ovation.

What's Happening at the Playhouse
April 2009
|
|

Mt Redoubt isn't the only action on the Peninsula. The Playhouse is bursting with activity as we get ready for spring and summer.
Last weekend, the Fashion Divas opened Kenai Performers' newest fund raising venture; the Curtain Call Consignment Boutique.
Sudden Theatre will open on April 17 and run through April 26. A myriad of 10 minute (or less) one acts showcasing the efforts and talents of some new (and not so new) performers and directors. Come check us out!
Summer Camp is scheduled to start on May 25. A creative way for kids to start out their summer! Carol Ford and her crew will be guiding campers through 4 weeks of intensive stagecraft, culminating in shows performed by the campers.
The Kenai Performers' Season's Committee has set the 2009/2010 Season. Steel Magnolias, Grease, and The Tempest will anchor the season, and we'll be filling in with a new idea for a Halloween show, some more dinner theatre, and perhaps some one acts thrown into the mix.
The $500 Marjorie O'Reilly Scholarship is a one-time financial award that may be used toward the completion of a degree in Fine Arts. See article below for more details.

The History of Kenai Performers
By Clark Fair
OK, so maybe that's a bit premature, but Clark Fair has agreed to write it. The history of this 40+ year old community theatre, that is. In order to accomplish this however, we need help from everyone and anyone who has a program, a script, a newspaper article, pictures, memories, and stories about or pertaining to the Kenai Performers over the past 40 years.
Some names to jog your memories of the 1960's and 1970's are: Jean McMaster, Lance and Barbara Peterson, Phyllis Morin, Jean Brockel, Freddie Billingslea, Tom and Rosie Murphy, David and Lorrene Forbes, Don Nickel, Tom Atkinson, Irene Fandel, Craig E. Phillips, the Fine Arts Festival, Peninsula Dancers, Pier One Theatre.
Carol Ford has recreated a timeline from the mid 1980's to the present. Any additional information and stories that you would like to share would be greatly apreciated.

Sudden Theatre 2009
One little thing after another.

Under the guiding hand of Artistic Director, Marc Berezin, Sudden Theatre 2009 opens on April 17 at the Playhouse. Marc and 8 other directors are presenting a total of 12 shows of varying subjects and formats in this year's offering of 10 minute one act plays.
According to Berezin, "I love the ten-minute play. Each piece is a complete (short) story with a complete (short) plot. It's the perfect format for community theatre, in that a) an aspiring director can take one on and get some indication as to whether s/he has the ability and willingness to someday direct a longer piece, and b) it's a good way to entice new actors into community theatre. Rehearsal schedules are pretty light, so the commitment is less daunting. It also allows you, our faithful audience, to see a variety of pieces, each with (mostly) different actors and director, all in one night. As "they" say, tonight you'll laugh, you'll cry; mostly I hope you'll enjoy."
Show Times: Fridays - 7pm
Saturdays - 7pm
Sunday - 3pm
Show Dates: April 17, 18, 19
April 24, 25, 26
Tickets: General Admission - $10
Students/Seniors - $8
Ticket Outlets: River City Books

Summer at the Playhouse 2009
Creative Play...
The dates are set, and the staff is gearing up for another fun filled month of summer theatre camp designed just for kids! Carol Ford will lead the troupes in the production of yet another wonderful set of shows... a great way to wind up a school year and an even greater way to begin the summer.
Campers can expect to learn the basics of stagecraft, including learning not only how to "act", but what it takes to construct sets and costumes, many of the aspects of production work, stage makeup, and other skills useful not only on stage, but in life.
School aged children just out of first grade through sixth grade are invited to enroll in Summer at the Playhouse 2009 from May 25 through June 19 with show dates: June 19, 20, 21. Kids just out of sixth through 12th grades will begin camp on June 1 through 26 with show dates: June 26, 27, 28. Enrollment for either camp is $400

Hello All,
We're launching this newsletter as a means by which to keep you all in the loop as to what's going on with the Kenai Performers.
Amidst the upcoming shows and summer camps and workshops, we're launching a new fund raising branch of Kenai Performers (more about that below).
We invite you to share your thoughts, opinions, and dreams. Some will be printed- all will be taken into consideration.

Have you ever thought about directing a play but found the prospect a little intimidating? Here's your chance to try it on and see how it fits without making The Big Commitment. As one whose first (and only) directorial experiences were with ten-minute plays, I highly recommend it. Casts are typically smaller, and rehearsal schedules are very easy on one's personal life. If you have seen or participated in either of our previous evenings of ten-minute plays, you know how much fun they are!
We are looking for people to direct one or more shows, up to about twelve shows. Here are the vitals:
Auditions March 7 and 8, at the Playhouse. There will be a directors' meeting an hour prior to the first audition session to plan the process for auditions.
Play dates are: April 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, at the Playhouse.
As with last year's Sudden Theatre, the stage will be nothing but a black background and legs, and the only set pieces will be black wooden boxes of various sizes that can be used singly or in combination to evoke whatever you want. Props are fine, but I suggest you keep them to a minimum. We're after speedy transitions between plays.
Comedy, drama, young people, geezers, your choice. There are many websites where you can view and purchase scripts (we pay for scripts and royalties, of course). Some are:
www.hitplays.com/10-minute
www.10-minute-plays.com
www.theatrehistory.com/plays/10minute.html
www.lazybeescripts.co.uk
...and many more. Or write your own! The only requirements are that the play is 10 minutes in length or shorter, and it must not be rated nastier than PG-13.
If you are interested in directing a play (you don't need to have a specific play in mind at this point), or if you have any questions or concerns at all, please email Marc Berezin at mberezin@educdatasys.com, or call me. My home office number is 262-8874.

ANNOUNCING: SUDDEN THEATRE 2009!

Auditions for "Sudden Theatre", an evening of ten-minute plays, will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, at 2:00 pm at the Playhouse. You need not show up both days. Pick a day! Shows will be April 17-26 (three shows each weekend).
We are looking for veteran and newcomer actors aged 14 and up (sorry, no small kids this time).
If you've been thinking about maybe perhaps possibly being in a show but haven't yet made the leap, this is the perfect way to try it on and see how it fits! Rehearsal schedules tend to be pretty easy, as each show is only ten minutes long.
Come ready to do some reading of play excerpts for one or more directors; that's about it!
Call Marc Berezin, 262-8874, or email me at mberezin@educdatasys.com for more info.
Hope to see you there!

Announcing the Grand Opening of the Curtain Call Consignment Botique!

Hello friends & neighbors,
Well, it's OFFICIAL! We've gotten the "green light" and have been working on getting the consignment store ready for our GRAND OPENING on Friday, March 27th & Saturday, March 29th from 10 AM to 5 PM. Carol Ford has come up with the name "Curtain Call Consignment Boutique" which we feel is very fitting.
We are currently taking consignments of your new or gently used name brand & designer clothing, handbags, shoes, jewelry & accessories. Please email us or call Mary at 398-2931 to make arrangements for dropping off your items to us. Please don't just drop things at the Playhouse. "The Fashion Divas" from the Kenai Performers will need to arrange a time to meet with you. Our prices will be similar to those of other High End Consignment stores in Anchorage such as "Out of the Closet", "Plain Jane" & "The Clothesline." The seller will get 50% of the sales price & The Kenai Performers will get the other 50%. Please see the attached contract for details.
We are looking for some items to help us get our store set up. If you have any of the following items & would be willing to donate them to The Kenai Performers, we would be very thankful. We are a non-profit organization with very limited funds but if needed, may be able to get approval from the board to pay an agreed upon amount for certain fixtures.
Counters/cabinets
Jewelry display cases, trays, etc.
Joy Mangano "huggable hangers"
Plastic hangers
Pants hangers with clips
Clothing rounders or 4-way racks, etc.
Your recycled paper shopping bags from Nordstroms, Gap, Banana Republic, etc.
Please feel free to pass this email along to your friends. Without an advertising budget, we are relying upon word of mouth in our community & appreciate your efferts. We would love to make this a success for the Kenai Performers so they can continue to showcase our talented community members through musicals & other performances.
See you at Curtain Call Consignment Boutique for our GRAND OPENING the end of March! It's located in the Kenai Performer's Playhouse behind The Kenai Visitors Center on Overland Street.
The Kenai Performers FASHION DIVAS,
Mary Krull & Kelly Griebel

Prince William Sound Community College Presents the 16th Annual Last
Frontier Theatre Conference
Valdez, Alaska - June 14-21, 2008
The Last Frontier Theatre Conference takes place yearly in beautiful
Valdez, Alaska. 50 to 65 playwrights are chosen to have their work presented
in the Play Lab. Selected plays receive a rehearsed reading that is responded
to by a panel of theatre professionals. Additionally, each writer will
have a private conversation about their script with one of their panelists.
The Conference includes multiple classes and panel discussions on the
craft and business of theatre. There will also be additional opportunities
for Play Lab writers to present more of their short work generated at
the Conference. Each night there are live performances, followed by receptions.
Each year a new community of theatre artists is formed from the hundreds
of attending playwrights, directors, actors, and theatre enthusiasts who
come from all over the world.
Entries should be submitted via e-mail to the Conference coordinator
at dmoore@pwscc.edu as either a Microsoft Word document or a PDF file.
If submitting by e-mail is a problem, contact the Conference Coordinator
to make other arrangements. Scripts are eligible if they:
~Have not received a production. Readings and amateur productions are
acceptable.
~Have a running time between twenty minutes and two hours. Please note
that more short plays will be accepted than lone ones, so submitting a
shorter script increases your chances of being invited.
~Are not musicals.
~Are received by February 1, 2008.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS CAST:
SEYMOUR
Mid-twenties and perhaps balding a little. Our insecure, naive, put-upon,
florist's clerk hero. Above all, he's a sweet and well-meaning little
man. He is not a silly, prat-falling nerd, and therefore should not be
played as the hero of a Jerry Lewis film. Tenor.
Low A to High G
AUDREY
The bleached-blond, Billie-Dawn-like, secret love of his life. If you
took Judy Holiday, Carol Channing, Marilyn Monroe and Goldie Hawn, removed
their education and feelings of self-worth, dressed them in spiked heels
and a low-cut black dress, and then shook them all up in a test tube to
extract what's sweetest and most vunerable--that'd be Audrey. Soprano.
Low A to High D
MR. MUSHNIK
Their boss. A failure of an East Side florist. His accent, if he has one,
is more that of middle class New York than of Eastern Europe. He seldom
smiles but often sweats. Baritone.
Low G to High E flat
ORIN
A tall, dark, handsome dentist with a black leather jacket and sadistic
tendencies. He is NOT, however, a leftover from the movie version of Grease.
Think instead of an egotistical pretty-boy — all got up like a greaser
but thinking like an insurance salesman and talking like a radio announcer.
Baritone and/or able to sing-speak.
THE PLANT (AUDREY II)
VOICE OF THE PLANT
An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado. It has
a huge, nasty-looking pod which gains a shark-like aspect when open and
snapping at food. The voice is provided by an actor on an offstage microphone
OR from within the plant itself. The sound is a cross between Otis Redding,
Barry White, and Wolfman Jack. Think of The Voice as that of a street-smart,
funky, conniving villain — Rhythm and Blues' answer to Richard the
Third. Bass.
THE BOUFFANTS
Three to five female street urchins who function as participants in the
action and a Greek Chorus outside it. They're young, hip, smart and the
only people in the whole cast who REALLY know what's going on. In their
"Greek Chorus" capacity, they occasionally sing to the audience
directly. And when they do, it's often with a "secret-smile"
that says: "we know something you don't know." They need to
be able to sing three-part 1960's girls' group harmonies complete with
choreographed moves, bouffant hair and to-die-for outfits. Soprano and
alto harmony parts.
OTHER SPEAKING/ SINGING ROLES
Chorus members who sing in the big numbers and who also play roles including:
A Voice Not Unlike God's, Wino #1, Wino #2, Customer, Old Chinese Man,
Radio Announcer, Girl in the Dentist's Chair, Mr. or Miss Bernstein, Mrs.
Luce, Skip Snip, and Patrick Martin.
PLANT DANCERS
A group of dancers willing to provide visual interest and movement for
the Plant as well as dance in other numbers.
